Preparation is the key! Whether you are doing the project yourself or hiring a contractor, you should know that careful preparation makes painting, staining and priming easier and reduces future maintenance. Complimentary Do-It-Yourself guides are available in the store--stop by today!

  1. Correct Structural Problems
  2. Make Surface Repairs i.e. fill nail holes, cracks, etc.
  3. Clean Surface, rinse and let dry
  4. Get the room ready i.e. remove furniture, window treatments and electrical switch plates
  5. Put drop cloths in place
  6. Prime unpainted or worn surfaces
  7. Calculate your paint needs--bring your room dimensions and we'll calculate it for you!

  1. Put drop cloths in place under the areas you plan to paint
  2. Make sure surfaces are smooth and free of cracks
  3. Use putty to fill any nail head depressions, cracks, and imperfections
  4. For glossy or shiny surfaces, lightly sand for better adhesion
  5. Wash under eaves to remove any salt that may have accumulated
  6. Remove dust, dirt & mildew
  7. Prime any exposed areas where paint has worn thin, peeled, or blistered
  8. Clean and prime your gutters and downspouts

NEW WOOD: Make sure wood is dry and ready to accept a finish (use water bead test). If necessary, remove any mill glaze with Mulit-Purpose Cleaner & Brightener (063) or with a thorough sanding. Be sure to let the wood dry thoroughly before coating.

WEATHERED WOOD: First, remove all traces of loose wood fibers and mildew with Wood Restorer (062). If cedar or redwood, follow with Multi-Purpose Cleaner & Brightener (063). Be sure to let the wood dry thoroughly before coating.

Previously Stained or Painted Wood

CLEAR, TRANSPARENT OR SEMI-TRANSPARENT FINISHES: Remove the previous coating with Finish Remover (061). For cedar or redwood, follow with Multi-Purpose Cleaner & Brightener (063). Be sure the let the wood dry thoroughly before coating.

SOLID COLOR FINISHES: If previous coating is in good condition (no flaking or peeling evident), use Multi-Purpose Cleaner & Brightener (063) to remove dirt. If previous coating is in poor condition, remove the old finish with Finish Remover (061). Be sure to let the wood dry before coating. Prime bare wood with Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Fast Dry Alkyd Primer (094).
